What is Purlin?

A purlin is a horizontal beam or bar used for structural support in buildings, usually on a roof. Purlins are supported by either rafters or building walls. They are commonly used in metal buildings, although they sometimes replace closely spaced rafters in wooden frame structures.

A roof purlin supports the weight of the roof deck. The roof deck is a wood panel, plyboard, or metal sheeting that forms the roof surface. When made of wood, it is usually covered with some type of weatherproofing and sometimes with an insulation material.

Several types of purlins exist. They are divided into categories based on the material from which they are made and their size. Purlin is important because, without it, there is no frame for the sheet to rest on the roof, making purlins important for the roof structure.
